Adilabad: Adulteration of edible oil is stated to be going on unchecked in Adilabad, Nirmal, Mancheriyal and Asifabad districts. Adulteration has reached an alarming level and even claimed a woman’s life in Bela mandal.In Adilabad district, there are two oil mills, where no production activity takes place but traders do a brisk business with a business turnover running into several crores of rupees. Cotton seed oil is the lowest ever oil available in the market in terms of quality for Rs 30 a kg.

In Nirmal and Bhainsa regions, the sale of adulterated edible oils reached the peak making detection of adulterated oil almost impossible. The oil is being adulterated with animal fat in Nirmal, while in Khanapur of Adilabad district, oil extracted from animal bones for the purpose of adulteration was discovered.

The oil extract is harmful to health. The oil is being supplied to roadside food vendors and fast food restaurants exposing people to a great health risk.In Nirmal, vigilance officials raided on an establishment which is manufacturing adulterated oil and registered cases against them. But there was no let up in the trade as adulteration of edible oil is a multi-crore business.

A consumer Lakshmi alleged that the officials turned the other way while the illegal trade thrives on.In spite of getting caught, the culprits have showed no signs of any repentance. The traders are selling adulterated coconut oil with soya oil and selling it as groundnut oil. They are selling it for Rs 75 or Rs 80. The adulterated oil when used in preparation of food is emitting a nauseating smell.

The vigilance and enforcement officials raided on establishments selling adulterated oil and registered 25 cases during the past 11 months in the undivided Adilabad district. The raids were conducted on four shops in Adilabad district, three in Asifabad district, four in Mancheriyal and two in Nirmal districts. The samples were sent to laboratory in Hyderabad for analysis, vigilance and enforcement official Bapuji said.

The traders are selling edible oil loosely, which is prohibited. Oil should be sold in packets alone. If any trader is selling packaged edible oil, the packet should contain specifications like batch number, relevant labels and company name and so on.
He threatened action against those who violate rules.
