Khammam: It would be considered a real tribute if the Birth Anniversary of Savithribai Phule is observed as Women Teachers’ Day every year, expressed retired lecturer Thirunagari Lakshmi Narsaiah and State leaders of the BC Sub-plan Sadana Sangam, Yerra Srikanth in Khammam on Tuesday.
The 186th birth anniversary celebrations of Savithribai Phule are held on a grand scale every year under the leadership of the 'Private Reservations Sadhana Sangam' (PRSS) at Manchikanti Bhavan, District General Secretary Nadendla Srinivas said.
Speaking on the occasion, retired lecturer T Lakshmi Narsaiah said that along with her husband Jyotirao Phule, Savithribai Phule played an important role in improving women rights in India by establishing a first women school in Pune.
It is a good sign that Google marked the 186th birth anniversary of Savithribai Phule on Tuesday with a Google doodle, said retired lecturer Thirunagari Lakshmi Narsaiah.
“She worked hard to abolish discrimination against women especially the barbers and prevented the widows to shave their heads, which use to be a social and cultural practice, and inspired many other women leaders like Pandit Ramabhai, Tarabhai Shindey and Anandibhai Gopal Joshi to start various movements to get their rights,” he added.
He also said, “As one of the very few indigenous literate women of the time she worked for the welfare of the women as an educational and social reformer.
She won appreciation from all sections of the society by serving people suffering with plagues disease and helping those affected during the time of famine which occurred in the year 1896-97.”
Savithribai rendered services to the women belonging to the deprived sections of the society through ‘Sathyasodhak Samaj’ until her last breath.
It would be a great tribute to Savithribai phule if the government declares her Birth Anniversary as Women Teachers’ Day on 3 January, said by Lakshmi Narsaiah.
