Kamareddy: While Kamareddy district is forging ahead in other areas of development, it is lacking behind in the rate of literacy levels. Although new industries were being setup in the district, the literacy level has not been enhanced.

While the government is making efforts to raise the literacy level, it is still not clear whether the officials were indifferent or the people lack awareness.

Inspite of the fact that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao himself has stated that Kamareddy was the educational hub, the low literacy level is quite alarming.

The present percentage of literacy in Kamareddy district is 48.49 per cent which is much below the average level of the Telangana State.

There are several tribal hamlets in the district and this could be the reason for the low level of literacy, especially in the remote corners of the villages.

Although there are 324 adult educational centres in the district and funds being released into them on a regular basis, most of them were found to be non-functioning.

There is also a growing criticism that these centres have become merely ornamental as classes were not being held.

Speaking to the Hans India here on Friday, some of the villagers alleged that the sarpanch was interfering in the functioning of the adult educational centres.

They said that they were extremely worried over the slow progress in enhancing the literacy levels of the district.

If the present trend continued, literacy level would remain low, they added and expressed the hope that the State government would take steps to enhance the literacy levels.
