Not often you get to see someone like Mamidi Harikrishna, who hails from Shayampet village in Warangal Rural district, steal the limelight in the Telugu tinsel world not just once, but thrice winning the Nandi Award. By achieving this, he added another feather in the crown of Warangal, the undisputed cultural capital of Telangana.
Warangal: Not often you get to see someone like Mamidi Harikrishna, who hails from Shayampet village in Warangal Rural district, steal the limelight in the Telugu tinsel world not just once, but thrice winning the Nandi Award. By achieving this, he added another feather in the crown of Warangal, the undisputed cultural capital of Telangana.
Multifaceted, Harikrishna, who is in his mid-40s, is a film critic, documentarian, writer and folk lore expert. All this, while holding an important post like the Director of Culture in Telangana Government.
A voracious reader, the habit he inherited from his mother, Harikrishna thanks her profusely for being his source of inspiration. After his post graduation in Psychology, he got selected to the post of Assistant Registrar in the Cooperative Department in 1996 through Group-II.
He also worked in his home district before he was elevated to the current position. “What I am now is because of my mother Swarajyam and of course my father Sudarshan,” Harikrishna said, stating that he was fortunate to born in a family that has progressive thinking.
In a nutshell, Harikrishna, defining himself said, “My life is all about 3Ms – movies, magazines and music, and 3Ps – philosophy, poetry and painting.”
Harikrishna, who wrote thousands of articles about movies, art, culture, heritage etc., has earlier worked as the Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Department in Warangal district before he was elevated to current position.
His works include ‘Telugu Cinemalalo Bhasha – Sahityam – Samskruti’, a first-of-its kind research oriented book, published by Telugu Akademi, on the occasion of 4th World Telugu Conference, 2012.
Some of his film-based programmes – Top 100 moveis, Hollywood 360, Bombay Talkies etc. This apart, he has the credit of interviewing the likes of Shyam Benegal, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Dr C Narayana Reddy, Veturi and Paruchuri Gopala Krishna.
His documentaries include Shatabdi Chitram, the 100-year celebration of the Indian Cinema, and Vishwambharudu that depicts the life of Dr C Narayanareddy.
He also rendered services as the Jury Member to the National Short & Documentary Film Festival organised by KAFISO in April, 2011, and at the prestigious Nandi Film Awards Selection Committee for the year, 2010. Harikrishna received Nandi Award for the Best Film Critic in 2009 and again in 2010 for the Best Jury Member.
On Wednesday, he again got the Nandi Award for the Best Film Critic for the year 2012 announced by the AP government, a rare feat that no one from Telangana has ever achieved. Well-known Telugu novelist and Sahitya Akademi award winner Ampasayya Naveen said: “It’s a huge achievement. Harikrishna not only brought accolades to Warangal but also made the literary world feel proud.”
