Bhadrachalam: River Godavari is getting dried even before the summer has set in. The river at Bhadrachalam has slimmed down drastically with the water levels receding, exposing the rocks and sand dunes.

According to Central Water Resources Department sub-divisional engineer T V Krishna Rao, the water level registered at Kaleswaram three days ago was seven feet. The present water level at Perur in Jayashankar Bhupalpally is five feet.

He said the water level at Bhadrachalam in January was at seven feet. “By February, the level decreased to 6.8 feet. It is just 6.5 feet now. By May it would further go down to 3.4 feet.

Last year, it was 5.7 feet in March, 3.5 feet in April and 3.4 feet in May,” he added. He also said that the upstream areas may reach minimum water level due to lack of rains.

Thandra Venkata Ramana, a senior citizen from Bhadrachalam, said Public Health Department supplies water through intake wells. He is worried of water scarcity in the months to come.

The water level in the river has been decreasing at a fast pace when compared to previous years. The people of Bhadrachalam appealed to the government to make alternative arrangements in order to solve drinking water problem that would occur.
