Kothagudem: Zilla Parishad Chairperson Gadipalli Kavitha has called upon officials and elected people’s representatives to safeguard women’s self-respect by undertaking construction of toilets under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).
Taking part in a programme on NREGA along with District Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu on Tuesday, she called for villages becoming cent per cent open defecation-free and improving sanitation. Elected people’s representatives should work towards this goal with dedication, she said. Kavitha further called for sensitising people through street plays over conserving and harvesting rain water.
Later taking part in the 191th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, she noted that Phule become a great reformer as he desired society’s good in spite of hailing from a backward class. Holding lack of education as the reason for backwardness in society, Phule with the help of his spouse Savitribai became instrumental in starting schools for girls.
District Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu underlined the need for taking up works extensively under the NREGA during the next two months. Of the 4,000 farm ponds proposed to be taken up under the programme, over 500 have been developed and 3,500 are yet to be developed.
He called for digging of trenches, individual toilets, and rain water harvesting structures through the NREGA and released wall posters on Jalanidhi, farm ponds and Vermicompost. Taking part in the Phule’s Jayanti celebrations, he emphasised on women’s education and asked parents to send their daughters to schools. Joint Collector M Ram Kishan, Revenue Divisional Officer Ravindranath and others also took part in the programmes.
