Former chief whip G Venkata Ramana Reddy and former minister D Sridhar Babu have demanded the Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao immediately visit Enumamula agriculture market in Warangal to take stock of the chilli farmers’ situation.
Congress leaders organised one-day Rythu Deeksha, in support of chilli farmers’ problems
Hanamkonda: Former chief whip G Venkata Ramana Reddy and former minister D Sridhar Babu have demanded the Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao immediately visit Enumamula agriculture market in Warangal to take stock of the chilli farmers’ situation.
If the CM doesn’t wish to visit Warangal, he could go to Khammam agriculture market and interact with the farmers. The CM should at least respond to the chilli farmers’ crisis, which was getting worse day by day, they said.
Demanding the State government to procure chilli at Rs 12,000 per quintal through Markfed, Congress leader Venkata Ramana Reddy has taken up a day-long ‘Rythu Deeksha’ at Ekashila Park in Hanamkonda on Wednesday.
The deeksha was attended by Sridhar Babu, senior Congress leader Nandi Yellaiah and others. Speaking to presspersons, the leaders said the Deeksha was taken up to open the eyes of the State government, which was acting indifferently towards chilli farmers. The farmers were distressed due to a steep fall in prices but the government was not responding.
On the other hand, the government was blaming the opposition parties for the protests by farmers and arresting the farmers under false cases. It was sad that even the farmers were forced to undergo restrictions at the markets. The attitude of the government was high condemnable, they said.
The Centre should not remain a silent spectator to the chilli farmer’s crisis and come up with urgent measures to address their problem. The Union Agriculture Minister, Radha Mohan Singh, should visit the markets in the State and work in coordination with the State government to support the farmers.
Speaking to The Hans India on the day, Ramana Reddy said ‘It is good that the Centre has decided help the chilli farmers ensuring marketing intervention. The State should on its part offer Rs 1,500 as bonus per quintal chilli, besides the Centre’s price of Rs 5,000 and additional Rs 1,250 for packaging’.
He wanted the TRS government to allocate Rs 15,000 crore for the purpose of supporting chilli farmers. A large number of chilli farmers have already sold their produce at through away prices and they should also be offered some relief by giving them bonus.
Ramana Reddy wondered why the CM and his cabinet colleagues concerned were silent even as the farmers were in a great predicament and claiming that they were happy. ‘Can’t they see how the farmers were protesting? he posed.
The Congress leaders also demanded lift the curbs imposed on entry and movement of farmers at Enumamula market and allow the trade goes on in a peaceful and free manner. A large number of tenant farmers were facing trouble due to the restrictions, they said.
At the end of the day, Yellaiah offered lime juice to Ramana Reddy and Sridhar Babu ending their Deeksha. The party senior leaders G Vijaya Rama Rao, P Veeraiah and others were present.
