Hanamkonda: Awareness rallies, blood donation camps marked the World Blood Donors Day observed across the district on Wednesday highlighting the importance of blood donation.
A massive rally was taken by Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) marking the day. The society chairman Dr T Ravinder Rao flagged off the rally on the IRCS premises in Hanamkonda.
Nearly, 200 students from Daffodils High School and Ideal High School took part in the rally along with the Society office bearers. The rally passed through Telangana Keerthi Sthupam, Excise Colony and other areas.
Speaking on the occasion, the IRCS chairman appealed to the youth to come forward and donate blood. Signifying the importance of blood donation, he said donating blood would save lives of those in emergency.
Hence, every healthy individual should try to donate blood at regular intervals, he suggested, adding that this years’ World Blood Donors Day slogan, ‘Give Blood-Give Now-Give Often’ highlights the same.
IRCS managing committee members Dr P Vijaychander Reddy, G Purushotham, EV Srinivasa Rao, Potlapalli Srinivas Rao, B Hariprasad, manager M Ravinder Rao, doctor S Ramkishan, staff G Siva Kumar, Lions Club of Hanamkonda president P Sanjeeva Reddy and secretary K Subhash were present.
In Warangal, NSS volunteers of AVV College, led by programme officer K Srinivas Rao, took out a rally to mark the day. The rally was flagged off by the college principal, D Raghupathy.
At a programme at IMA Hall, certificates of appreciation were given to the NSS programme officer and others who regularly donate blood. Kakatiya Medical College principal V Chandrashekar and additional DMHO Swapna Madhuri, IMA president Anand Bhokrey and others participated in the programme.
At Jangaon, unit of IRCS, a blood donation camp was organised. About 20 youth under the leadership of activist M Raju donated blood. IRCS medical officer C Ramnarsaiah and others were present.
In Nalgonda: Students from various colleges in the district donated blood on the occasion of World Blood Donors Day on Wednesday. They also promised to create awareness about blood donation which they said was very important in the present scenario where one person for every two seconds is badly in need of blood.
Nalgonda Sandbox CEO Gona Redddy informed that healthy persons could donate blood once in three months. This has to be done in a safe way by agencies like Red Cross Society and others.
The programme was organised by Nalgonda Sandbox with the support of Komatireddy Pratheek Foundation. Red Cross Society Chairman Sri Goli Amarenderedy inaugurated the blood donation camp at Redcross Society, Nalgonda.
Speaking on this occasion, he appreciated LEAD members for being on the forefront in doing social service and developing leadership qualities among students.
Dr Subba Rao, government junior college principals Narendra Kumar, Ashok Reddy, Mandadi Narsi Reddy, Sreenivas Reddy, Krishna and students took part.
In Peddapally: Blood donation saves a person and brings him back from the claws of death, said District in-charge Collector S Prabhakar Reddy in the town on Wednesday.
Inaugurating a blood donation camp at Government Hospital organised on the occasion of World Blood Donors Day, he said it was good to donate blood twice or thrice a year which saves the lives of people in danger.
However, there are some misconceptions among people on blood donation which are not correct, he added. The in-charge Collector said donation of blood not only saves the person but also helps the donor in regenerating blood that was donated within few days of time along with keeping him physically fit. He said proposals were sent to the State government for establishing a blood bank here in Peddapally.
The Collector lauded the efforts of the organisers of the blood donation camp and the youth along with the donors who actively participated in the camp.
District Medical and Health Officer Bikshapathi, president of Peddapally Development Forum P Shankar, Mekala Mallesham and others were also present on the occasion.
Facts to be kept in mind Pre & Post Blood Donation
Before Blood Donation:
- People between the ages of 18 years to 65 years can donate blood.
- The weight of the donor should be more than 45 kg.
- The pulse rate must be between 50 to 100/minutes without any irregularities.
- Body temperature should be normal and oral temperature should not exceed 37.5 degree Celsius.
- The blood pressure should be below 160 systolic and below 100 diastolic at the time of donation
- A prior medical examination should be performed to screen for disease and medication.
After Blood Donation:
- Blood volume returns to normal levels within 48 hours to 72 hours after blood donation
- Drink at least 10 -12 glasses of water within 24 hours
- Don't consume alcohol for 24 hours
- Avoid driving for two-to-three hours
- Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun
- Avoid smoking for three to four hours
Myths & Facts associated with Blood Donation
Myth: Blood Donation is an exceedingly painful activity.
Fact: Donating blood is not painful at all. One only feels a slight pinching sensation when the needle pricks the arms.
Myth: You cannot donate blood more than once.
Fact: A healthy person can donate blood four times a year with a minimum 3 months gap between each blood donation.
Myth: Blood donation induces weakness, headaches and vomiting.
Fact: Blood donation cannot cause headache and vomiting if the blood pressure of the donor is within normal limits. To avoid vomiting, there should be one hour gap from the person's last meal
Myth: I will get infected while donating blood
Fact: Sterlilisation is maintained at all steps of blood donation and only disposable bags are used
Myth: Giving blood is time consuming
Fact: Actual donation process is around 10 - 15 minutes. Donors are kept waiting for 20 minutes post donation just to see the reaction, if occurred
Diet before donating Blood:
- Eat iron rich foods. For Example - Spinach
- Include foods which are rich in Vitamin C.
For Example - Oranges
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid fatty foods for 24 hours before you donate blood.
- Eat a healthy meal before your donation.
Diet after donating Blood:
- Drinking plenty of liquids
- Eat foods rich in Folic Acid.
For Example - Spinach
Eat foods rich in Vitamin B-2 (Riboflavin).
For Example - Diary Products
- Eat foods rich in Vitamin B-6. For Example - Eggs
- Without iron, your body cannot maintain or produce healthy red blood cells.
- Eating the right foods afterward can help replenish lost iron and vitamin stores.
