A new study on the energy consumption of iPhone has revealed something shocking. It has been found that an iPhone uses more energy than a refrigerator on an annual basis. While a refrigerator uses 322kWh per year, an iPhone consumes 361kWh taking into account the wireless connections, data usage and battery charges.
Information and communications technology worldwide use 10% of the global electricity and even this is a low estimate. Wireless broadband can increase the figure to a great height. Information sector relies heavily on coal power and unlike other energy leeches the cloud is never turned off making it extremely difficult to reduce electricity and carbon emissions. This situation is unlikely to change in future but need for new and cleaner alternatives is very crucial.
