Hyderabadis Rock It. There is a growing awareness among people on the importance and need to preserve rocks.

Over 300 enthusiasts converged at the University of Hyderabad in a show of solidarity for rocks

School children, working professionals, teenagers and even the old numbering over 300 got together at the University of Hyderabad to take part in the second edition of Hyderabad Rockathon, conducted by Society to Save Rocks in partnership with Great Hyderabad Adventure Club (GHAC) on Sunday.

The one-day event had something for everyone. From adventurous activities like Rock Walks, Rock Photography, Rock Quiz, Drawing Workshops, Rock Shot Put, Rock Balancing and Installations, Adventure activities include a Trail Run, Rappelling, Bouldering, Zip Line and Slack Lining. While photographers had a field day, participants made the most of the opportunity by taking part in a variety of events.

Organised to spread awareness on the preservation of the rockscape in the region, the event witnessed an increase in the number of participants this year. Frauke Quader, Secretary, Society to Save Rocks said, “There is a need to preserve the rock formations that date back to over 2500 million years.”

Diyanat, founder, GHAC said, “We need more such events to create awareness about the need for protection of rocks which hold much importance for adventure activities like rock climbing, rappelling and its associated activities."

The event witnessed participants as young as 6 year old and 78 years. Sangeeta Varma, of Society to Save Rocks said, “There is a growing awareness among people on the importance and need to preserve rocks. It is heartening to see so many youngsters coming out to show support.”
