60% Of Metro Rail Challenges Are Non-Engineering. “Usage of high-end machinery like launching girders, heavy cranes and boom lifts, innovative design solutions, are helping the project.

The success of Hyderabad Metro Rail project largely depends on effective communication strategies, mass plantation drives, involvement of different groups and associations, said NVS Reddy, MD, Hyderabad Metro Rail.

Speaking at a three-day international conference on ‘Emerging Trends in Civil Engineering’ at VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering & Technology, Bachupally on Monday, the MD pointed out that only 40 per cent of the challenges of the Metro Rail project are engineering related. He advised engineers to adopt an interdisciplinary approach and acquire multiple skill sets including good communication and leadership skills to become successful project managers.
NVS Reddy informed that 90% of the Hyderabad Metro project structures were converted to ‘pre-casting’ method to reduce traffic management problems during construction on narrow congested roads.
“Usage of high-end machinery like launching girders, heavy cranes and boom lifts, innovative design solutions, are helping the project. Design innovations and conversion of project from a simple transportation engineering project to a multipurpose socio-economic project started winning coveted global awards for the Hyderabad Metro Rail project including ‘The Best Engineering Project of the Year-2013’ award at New York and RoSPA (Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents) Gold Award for ‘Construction Safety & Occupational Health’ at Glasgow, UK,” said the Metro Rail MD. Dr D N Rao, general secretary, Vignana Jyoti Institute; Prof. V Ramakrishnan of University of South Dakota, Prof. WF Geiger of Germany, Prof Indubhushan Patnaikuni of Australia, Prof T F Fwa of Singapore, Prof B Vijaya Raghavan of Australia and other international engineering experts participated in the conference.
