Kalasagaram has a tradition of organising plays in Tamil on the concluding day of their annual cultural fest and this time it was no different. Gurukulam, a renowned Chennai-based theatre group staged two plays written and directed by Madhava Boovaraga Murthy (MB Murthy) on the last day of Annual Cultural Festival at Keyes High School.
‘Ammavin Aranmanai’, the first play that was staged revolved around patriotism and love for mother land. Nataraja Aiyer and his siblings decide to perform satabhishekam to their father but as the fate would have it Nataraja Aiyer falls sick and his children after prolonged discussions decides to shift him to city away from the native village.
An adamant Aiyer opposes the idea and refuses to shift to city. The play ends with Aiyer’s eldest son reconciling with him and moving to village. MB Murthy, who played the titular character enlivened the audience with his performance, while the other cast Uma, R Bhaskar, Raghuraman, Anuradha, Sriraman, Jayanthi, Pandurangam, KB Kumar,Vishnu, Ramesh and Bhuvana Sundar played their roles to perfection to make the play enjoyable.
‘Enna Porutham?’ was staged on the last day of the cultural fest. Penned and directed by MB Murthy, the play had an interesting premise and focussed on the prevalent and relavent problem faced by youth in the society. Raghu and Janaki, are newly married who live in city away from parents. In due course Janaki suspects Raghu of having an affair with a colleague. Succumbing to the suspicion Janaki leaves Raghu and moves back to her parents.
Viswanathan (father of Janaki), who wants the pair to live together, ropes in a marriage counsellor , who through a series of melo dramatic incidents re-unites the pair. Raghu (SG Karthik), Janaki (Poorvaja Murthy), Viswanathan (VPS Sriraman) and counsellor (V Ramesh) were spot on with their performance. The dialogues were natural. The entire team of Gurukulam has to be lauded for the stupendous work they have put in to make the plays enjoyable. Special word of mention will have to go to Selvraaj (makeup), Perumal Babu (light and sound), Saidal Kumar (sets).
