Epidemic is a disease that spreads quickly among people but in the same place for a particular time. Figuratively it refers to crime or riots or any other issue that tends to spread quickly among people leading the government to tackle it quickly and effectively (religious riots can turn into an epidemic if the police fails to nip it in the bud; football hooliganism and cricketing disappointments can turn into epidemics when fans fail to restrain their emotions).

When a disease outbreaks or appears among animals, it is called epizootic which can occur among sheep, in poultries and pigsties. Many countries around the world (developed, developing and underdeveloped) have institutional mechanisms to deal with epidemics.

An endemic disease is regularly found in a particular group of people in an area, country or continent. Figuratively it refers to those issues that are hard to eliminate from the society such as the caste system. What are the diseases that are endemic to India? What are the endemic challenges of post-independent India?

The Telangana government has to confront endemic issues in the new state such as unemployment, disparities, better access to health and education among others. Malaria is an endemic disease in many subtropical and tropical countries like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Endemic diseases and issues nag India, and belittle its image in the international forums because they are longstanding. Derivatives of endemic: Endemic, endemically, endemics, and endemism. Pandemic is an infectious disease that occurs across the country or over an entire region or the whole world. It outbreaks or occurs in large areas. The world had witnessed tuberculosis, smallpox, AIDS/HIV, and H1N1 in 2009. It is an epidemic in greater proportions.

Pandemic comes from the Greek word ‘Pandemas’ which means public. Like epidemic and endemic, pandemic also functions as both a noun and an adjective. India has succeeded in removing few endemic diseases and it is geared up to tackle epidemics and also cooperates with the world to handle pandemics by assisting WHO and UNICEF.
