The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials claim that 3600 tonnes of garbage is being transported to the Jawahar Nagar daily but in reality just 1800 to 2400 tonnes is being dumped. The waste is being transported in 54 vehicles in three shifts but most of the vehicles are more than 17 years old and are beyond repair. A member of one of the workers union said that ninety per cent of the vehicles are beyond repair.

Also waste is not collected from several areas. There are 54 six-tonne capacity vehicles and about 10 ten-tonne vehicles but not all are used on a daily basis as most always go for repair. A senior official in the transport wing said that the vehicles have passed their prime long ago and the corporation needs to get new vehicles.

There are about 1000 drivers out of which 750 are on duty to transport the waste to Jawaharnagar and there are 1550 labour (outsourced), the workers unions have been demanding to regularise their jobs. Many are unwilling to get onto the vehicles until new ones are bought. Ramulu (name changed on request) says ‘There is no security and the vehicles can break down anytime. Every time I get onto the wheels there is no guarantee that we would not meet with an accident.”
