Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Traffic Police (HTP) department not only became people friendly but started using social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and others to interact with the citizens and circulate important messages. In a welcome move, the admin of their Facebook page clarified the rumour going around social media platforms misinforming the people about traffic diversions through November 20 through 30.
HTP is regularly keeping a track on traffic movement during peak hours and updating it on social networking sites. Their prompt updates were particularly useful during the recent downpour that informed citizens on traffic flow, water logging and relief operation.
In addition, the department is using social media with campaigns including “Tag that friend who rides a bike without license”, “Tag that friend who rides a bike without helmet”, “Tag that friends who always Drink and Drive” and others, showing a remarkable sense of humour on the department’s part.
When asked how social media is helping them maintain rules, Traffic DCP LC Chanhan told CityLife that social media has improved their relations with the public. “Earlier it was difficult to communicate with the people be it related to e-challan, helmet rule, 12-point system and others. Now, with one update we reach lakhs of followers,” he said.
Chanhan said that social media is bringing out a change in the people on roads especially in the West zone that includes IT employees and students.
Deepak Shrivastav, a Facebook user welcomed the interactive HTP. “Our traffic police team has become cooler than earlier. This is what a global city always needed. Hats off to team. Keep up the good work,” he said.
The page is open to suggestions from people regarding traffic jams and users are pouring in with their ideas. Being tech-savvy is a pre-requisite in this day and age and the Hyderabad Traffic Police has proved itself a forerunner in adapting with the times. Kudos!
