Hyderabad: Professor Hiroshi Amano, Nobel Laureate (2014) in Physics “for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes (LED), which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources", on Thursday visited CSIR-IICT in connection with its platinum jubilee year celebrations of the institute and delivered an inspiring lecture and interacted with the staff and students.

In the lecture :Prof. Amano pointed out that ‘Creation of white light involves a combination of light spectrum or red, green, and blue lights. However, he has shown to the world for the first time that a low power blue light alone is adequate for generating the complex white light, which he demonstrated in the IICT auditorium.

Despite the blue LEDs proved to be much more difficult to create than the red and green diodes, he successfully accomplished this task by using the difficult-to-handle semiconductor Gallium Nitride. His spectacular contribution resulted in transformative electronics for the development of sustainable smart society.

Many students and scientists actively interacted with the Noble laureate. In response to a query by a young researcher, he said that ambition, sincere commitment to develop science for the mankind, constant efforts towards the goal were essential for success.

Appreciating the important research work being carried out at IICT, Prof. Amano proposed that IICT and his research group at Akasaki Research Centre, Nagoya Univesity, Japan, should join hands for further development of advanced semi-conducting materials. Dr. S. Chandrasekhar , IICT Director readily agreed. Prof. Amano wished that IICT should flourish and emerge as scientific fountainhead of the country.
