Hyderabad: Money is something which people accept thankfully but these days situations are different especially, in our city. Despite confirmation by RBI that they are legal tender people continue to be reluctant in accepting it. Rs 10 coins are being rejected by some of the shopkeepers, bus conductors, vendors etc.

At Lothkunta, bus conductor Raju gave the change of Rs 10 coin and two ladies found were arguing with him by saying that they could not accept this coin because government has banned it and that he was trying to dupe them by giving it to them. When the conductor was trying to make them understand they did not and they argued with him to give them a Rs 10 note instead.

As the conductor said: ‘It is not possible for us to give rupee notes as this is a bus, not a bank. Still, I had to give them a note and it is not us who are getting money from our home, we work under the government, so we are answerable to them’.

Nagama, a housewife said, ‘We do not understand what this government is up to? We are always under a misconception whether to accept the coins of 10 and 5 rupees or not. Sandhya, a lecturer says: ‘ All the nationalised as well as the cooperative banks should compulsorily put this information their notice board and on the cash, counters informing the Public that all 14 types of RS.10 coins are legal tender as per RBI directive’.

Taking up another dimension of the coin issue, a student, Sangita said, ‘I fail to understand why the coins should have different sizes. At least one can have uniformity in size, shape, thickness, colour and weight. We were much better off post-independence when the coins had different shapes that even a blind can understand’.
