Malkajgiri: There are over lakh nursery saplings in Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) store near Krupa Complex. The store provides saplings wherever required across the State, including the highways.

Oddly it lacks adequate workers to take care of the plants. As against five workers and a caretaker in the past, there are only two now. Three were sacked three months back. The main reason for this shortage is the delay of salaries paid by officials. Work of the three is now being done by one person, Mallesh of Medak district, who has come to the city in search of better life. His wife Anjamma shares the work burden, along with two other family members.

The couple watering from 9 am to 8 pm, said local residents Rajulakshmi, Renuka, Pitla Srinivas, while speaking to The Hans India. They said the family gets ready about 200 saplings a day, besides watering about one lakh saplings. Taking care of them has become the family’s main activity and their means of survival.

Mallesh fears loss of job if he complains to officials about the hardships facing his family because of delayed payment of wages of Rs 7,500. The couple are suffering silently putting up with all problems, like non-receipt of wage for about a month.

Local residents express anguish over the toil put in by the couple, while conveying to THI its suffering in doing the work. Mallesh and Anjamma appeal to the HMDA officials to appoint new workers in place of those who have been removed and pay wages once in three months. Rajulakshmi, Renuka and Srinivas have urged HMDA to respond to the couple’s plea.
