Hyderabad: In order to prevent sewerage flow into Hussain Sagar lake, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) officials in 2017 had taken up Interception and Diversion structure (I & D structure) at Necklace Road, but the construction work has been put on hold.

The I & D structure work was started to divert the sewerage and chemical effluents entering the lake through Kukatpally nala. The government had sanctioned Rs 5.68 crore for the I & D structure. When asked about it, the HMDA official said that the government sanctioned Rs 5.68 crore to divert the Kukatpally nala. However, due to the negligence of the contractor, the work has been put on hold. In fact, the department terminated the services of the contractor and would be soon appointing a new contractor, he added.

The official also assured that the I & D structure work at Necklace Road would be completed within two and a half months. It is to be noted that nine I & D structures out of 10 have been completed which include Kukatpally Nala, Pikcet Nala, Yousufguda, Banjara Hills, Balkapur and other structure at Bridge No 3 on Necklace Road near BS Maktha. Around Rs 11 crore is being spent on operation and management of Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) and I & D structures annually.
