Hyderabad: The State on Friday paid homage to veteran freedom fighter and former deputy prime minister Babu Jagjivan Ram on his 106th birth anniversary. The day was also observed as Samata Diwas.

Eleven couples entered into wedlock at a programme organised in Basheerbagh by the Jagjivan Ram Utsava Committee. All of them were inter-caste marriages. Babu Jagjivan Ram was a freedom fighter and a social reformer hailing from Scheduled Caste community.

He was instrumental in setting up 'All India Depressed Classes League', an organisation dedicated to attain equality for untouchables, in 1935. He was also elected to Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1937.
