The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Tuesday announced a slew of sops to street vendors. GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar said that a survey would be undertaken to identify street vendors and hawkers and identity cards would be issued to them.

Post the survey, street vending committees, which will be headed by the Commissioner, will be formed in every zone, which would work for the welfare of the vendors. These committees will decide the places where stalls are to be set up and Red Zones based on the recommendations by the town planning officials of the GHMC.

“The committees would decide three zones, Red Zone (no sale of any kind), Green Zone (commercial space for hawkers) and Amber Zone (limited number of hawkers) and cards would be given accordingly. Hawkers have to conduct their business activities based on their colour coded cards,” informed Commissioner Somesh Kumar.

The Commissioner promised that the hawkers and the vendors would not be harassed by the police or the corporation officials. It was also said that the Corporation would extend financial aid. The project would be implemented from January.
