Even as we call ourselves a progressive society, certain regressive acts force us to rethink our beliefs. For many in this country, girls are a burden even before they are born. And even if they are lucky enough to make it to this world, they have to face the societal evils well into their old age. But software engineers like Murli Kanne offer a silver lining of a better society.
Recently, when Murli and his friends were on their way to the gym, they happened to hear a baby cry. They were shocked to see a baby girl abandoned in a dustbin. Unfortunately, this was not the first encounter for Murli with an abandoned child. “I was in my eighth class when I had a similar experience. I found an abandoned child; worse the baby was physically deformed. At that tender age I didn’t know how to handle my emotions apart from screaming out for help” says Murli.
The fact that both the abandoned babies were girls touched Murli deeply. The recent incident took place near Usha Mullapudi Cardiac Centre in Jeedimetla. Murli immediately decided to fight for the baby’s life by providing shelter in an ashram. He used Facebook as a platform and posted for help. His efforts weren't futile. He got an overwhelming response which was evident as many couples wanted to adopt the girl.
However Murli choose the legal route by taking the baby to the police station and followed the legalities suggested by them for surrendering the child. The infant is now at Shishu Vihar, Ameerpet and has a name- Anshu. Murli is touched with the baby and plans to meet her as often as he can and even help her in many ways. “The detour to my gym has lighted up a child’s life,” he says.
