The TRS is bracing up for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls and the State budget presented on Wednesday offered enough indications on the party’s goal. As part of its strategy, the State Government seems to have delayed the disbursement of Food Security Cards (FSC) and has allocated an attractive amount in the budget for this financial year.

The FSC cards are likely to be distributed to the public in April. It is reported that over 9.4 lakh applications were received for the FSC and most of these documents are still under verification, which would be completed by the end of this month.

The polls are likely to be held sometime towards the end of the year.

“Though the term of the previous council of the corporation ended in December, the TRS is apparently jittery about its declining popularity among the urban voters in the face of the latest political developments. In this scenario, the government did not go for polls immediately after completion tenure,” a senior GHMC official said.

The FSC cards are likely to be distributed to the public in April. It is reported that over 9.4 lakh applications were received for the FSC and most of these documents are still under verification, which would be completed by the end of this month. Meanwhile to attract around 68 lakh voters in the corporation limits, the government has granted Rs 628.34 crore for the GHMC to take up works on skyscrapers, Krishna and Godavari water scheme, development of hospitals and other beautification works.

“Though the grant is much less than the GHMC’s demand for Rs 1,773 crore, the latest allocation is much higher than that of the previous grant Rs 370.93 crore,” a GHMC employee said. That is just the tip of the iceberg. “There is a separate budget of Rs 500 crore from the Chief Minister’s fund,” a GHMC staff said and predicted that the K Chandrasekhar Rao, who is keen to develop the city, would spend most of his funds for the civic body.

On the other hand, the TRS is encouraging defections in GHMC limits where it put up a poor show in the 2014 general elections. Political observers opine that the TRS is planning to attract as many leaders as possible from other political parties. They cited the examples of how senior Telugu Desam Party leaders Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Teegala Krishna Reddy, who are having a stronghold in the city, were attracted towards the pink party.
