After launching the driver-cum-owner (DCO) scheme, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is now planning to introduce the same for drivers of heavy vehicles. GHMC officials visited the garbage transfer station at Lower Tank Bund and interacted with the sanitary workers and drivers of the garbage vehicles.

After launching the driver-cum-owner (DCO) scheme, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is now planning to introduce the same for drivers of heavy vehicles. GHMC officials visited the garbage transfer station at Lower Tank Bund and interacted with the sanitary workers and drivers of the garbage vehicles.

Presently, the GHMC is spending Rs 5 lakh as hiring charges to private contractors. GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar directed officials to provide proper rest rooms, toilets, drinking water facilities for the convenience of the workers. Existing drivers working with the civic body through the years will get a chance of becoming an owner-cum-driver of the garbage vehicle very soon. The scheme would be taken forward in coordination with Urban Community Development wing. The civic body is also planning to provide cell phones to sanitary workers who collect garbage from door to door.
