After a stunning debut in the fashion circuit in 2012, Archana Rao is now one of the most promising fashion designers. howcasing her label ‘Frou Frou’ at the recent edition of Lakme Fashion Week, Archana Rao touched upon diaphanous capes and dainty tulle skirts teamed with collared shirts. Her collection named 'Unveiling the Apartment Today', a Paris inspired collection with a nostalgic appeal ,was all about big drapes, gossamer pearl patterns, lace-cut work and understated feminity.
The collection, which started with pastels like nudes, blush pinks, hint of yellow, pearly whites, slowly moved to darker hues like blues and olive. In a quick chat with CityTAB, the designer gets talking about her inspiration, her philosophy about the art and her fashion journey.
You are among the youngest of the lot and among the most promising too. How does it feel?
Well, at the moment there is a lot of new talent in India and it feels great to be alongside such remarkable labels. It took a lot of hard work and patience to get to where I am. But at the same time, there is still a long way to go from here.
What inspired you to get into the fashion industry?
I have always been a creative person. As a kid, I used to paint a lot and that is where it started off. Fashion in the beginning was just an avenue to leash out my creative energy. But I did enjoy it and here I am.
Can you tell us more about your new collection?
It’s a French theme, inspired by an abandoned apartment. I read an article about a woman who left her apartment during World War II and never returned again. The apartment was unlocked a couple of months ago and I felt strangely nostalgic. That was the whole vibe that I was going with for this collection, to create that mood of nostalgia.
What do you enjoy the most about designing clothes?
My favourite part of designing is conceptualising the collection. I love telling stories through the garments that I make.
Any tips for a budget fashionista?
I think one must invest in pieces that can be worn in different styles. Clothes should have a reusable quality.
