Kyushu Electric Power Co's two-reactor Sendai nuclear plant on Wednesday cleared safety regulations introduced after the Fukushima crisis, paving the way for the resumption of nuclear power generation in Japan.


Commissioners of the Nuclear Regulation Authority said in a televised weekly meeting that the reactors have cleared the final safety assessment. The plant still needs to go through operational checks before a restart.

Kyushu Electric hopes to restart the Sendai No. 1 reactor in southwestern Japan in late July, followed by the No. 2 reactor in late September.
