Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a tour of Tesla Motors, the makers of trend-setting electric cars, in a battery-powered cart.

Soon after his arrival in San Jose and after an interaction with the Indian American community, the prime minister visited the factory of Tesla, which was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers who wanted to prove that electric cars can be better than fossil fuel-powered cars.

PM Modi was given the tour by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. They were seen speaking while standing next to a gleaming red car manufactured by the company.

The prime minister, who has often spoken about renewable and alternative sources of energy, was given an overview of path-breaking inventions made by Tesla.

"We talked about electricity generation and the fact that arguably there's a way to skip ahead with electricity generation in the same way as it happened with cell phones," Elon Musk told reporters later.

Mr Modi is the first-ever Indian Prime Minister to visit Silicon Valley after it became the hub of global innovation and entrepreneurship.

He will later visit the headquarters of Facebook and Google.
