Islamabad : Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar on Monday inaugurated the Safe Cities project in Islamabad, a technology-based security system and which will ensure security of residents.

With the installation of 1,800 surveillance cameras across the federal capital, the Interior Minister claimed to have spent Rs. 126 million on the project so far. The cameras are to monitor important buildings, entry and exit polls, roads, commercial centers and a major portion of the city's residential areas, with its command and control center in a bombproof building at H-11.

Paying close attention to police reforms, Dawn quoted Nasir saying, "This project will be a failure if the deployed police do not perform their duties properly."

Nisar said that this is true policing, where every corner of Islamabad can be seen on camera adding that after a month's monitoring, the number of checkpoints in the city will also be reduced, reports Dawn.

Meanwhile, the provincial government has approved a total amount of Rs. 3 crore to make Quetta and Gwadar safe cities, which demands a net amount of Rs. 10 crore.
