Khammam: District Collector DS Lokesh Kumar here on Tuesday ordered the managements of all educational institutions to take initiation for enrolling the names of their students in the voter’s list by January 1.

The Collector chaired a meeting with the managements of junior, degree, engineering and medical colleges to discuss the voter enrollment, at Pragna Conference Hall in Collectorate in Khammam on Tuesday.

Speaking at the meeting, the Collector said youngsters who born on January 1, 2000 would complete 18 years of age by January 1, 2018 and they would be considered as ‘Millennium Voters’ and can enroll their names in the voter’s list by December end.

The Collector ordered the managements of the various educational institutions to appoint a campus ambassador. The application forms for voter enrolment would be handed over to the ambassador appointed by the respective colleges. The officials of District Electoral Department by coordinating with ambassadors will conduct awareness programmes at their respective institutions.

“Young voters are going to play a key role in the elections in future. Special awareness programmes will be organised for students to utilise their vote in a proper way,” informed the Collector. Voter enrollment can be done manually or through online. The managements must provide the facilities through the computer labs present in their college concerned for enrolling the names of the students who crossed 18 years of age, the Collector suggested.

Further, the voter identity cards would be issued to the Millennium Voters during a programme to be organised on the occasion of National Voter’s Day on January 25 besides felicitating them, added the Collector. District Employment Officer K Sriram, Electoral Department Deputy Tahsildar Rambabu, principals of various educational institutions attended the meeting.
