Khammam: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) district secretary Nunna Nageswar Rao here on Monday condemned the arrest of Opposition leaders during the visit of Ministers in the district. He described the arrest of Opposition leaders as “shameful,” and said it appeared that the Ministers cannot visit the district without the arrest of the leaders.

The police arrested Left party leaders and activists in anticipating of trouble during the visit of Minister for Information Technology and Municipal Administration and Urban Development K T Rama Rao here on Monday.

Rama Rao visited Khammam to participate in various development activities and to inaugurate the MLA camp office-cum-residence and 2bhk houses at Raghunathapalem mandal and in Shivaigudem under Khammam Rural mandal here on Monday.

The arrested leaders staged a sit-in protest in the police station and raised slogans against the police. Speaking on the occasion, Nageswar Rao alleged that the TRS leaders lacked courage to visit Khammam district without ordering the police arrest the Left party leaders. The TRS was scared of agitation because it had reneged on election promises, he said.

The government, he said, had ensured that the MLS’s camp office was constructed within six months. But, there was no progress in construction of two-bed room houses. CPI-M party State leaders Ponnam Venkateshwar Rao, Buggaveeti Sarala, Yerra Srikanth, Y Vikram, Y Srinivas, T Nagaraju, Gattu Ramadevi, A Narasimha Rao, Naveen Reddy, M AZabbar and T Lingaiah were among those arrested.
