Khammam: District Secretary of the Kallu-Geetha Karmika Sangham Merugu Sathyanarayana here on Tuesday alleged that the TRS government has neglected the toddy tappers. The government, he said, has not taken any measures for the welfare of the toddy tappers during the last four years. The Sangham was holding its general body meeting here.

Speaking at the meeting, Sathyanarayana said the government had not at all taken steps for the welfare of the toddy tappers though they were tax payers. They had opted for the risky task of collecting toddy.

The government, he said, had failed to provide security to the toddy tappers as result of which fewer persons were coming forward to take up the job. The TRS government did not sanction even one rupee for the welfare of the toddy tappers during its four years of rule. By encouraging the liquor sale in the State, the government was trying to ruin the toddy profession which was providing livelihood to a large number of people belonging to Goud community.

He demanded that the government set aside Rs 5,000 crore in budget for the welfare of the toddy tappers, besides allotting 10 acres of land in every village for growing of hybrid varieties of palm plants to save the toddy profession, and to pay pension of Rs.3,000 to those workers who crossed 50 years of age.

Members of the Kallu-Geetha Karmika Sangham Palleboina Narasimha Rao, Bonakal MPP Chittimodu Nageshwar Rao, Pullur Venkateshwarlu, S Ravinder and Pothigani Anjaiah were present at the programme.
