The irrigation officials are accused of secretly increasing the height of Prakasam barrage gates to provide additional quantity of water for Lanco Power Project. ysrVijayawada: The YSR Congress Party here on Monday expressed fears over safety of the historical Prakasam Barrage. The party also demanded thorough probe into irregularities in the storage of water at the barrage and diversion of water to power plants. The YSR Congress farmers' wing State convener and vice-president of Krishna Delta Protection Committee, MVS Nagi Reddy, alleged that the officials of the irrigation department have increased the height of the gates to supply additional water to the Lanco power project at Kondapalli. He said that the Delta Protection Committee had submitted a representation to the late Dr YS Rajasekhar Reddy in the past to provide surplus water to delta farmers. However, the irrigation officials have rejected the proposal claiming that increasing the height of the gates would pose a threat to the strength of the barrage. He said that the Delta Protection Committee had accepted the recommendation of the officials. He alleged that the officials have secretly increased the height of the gates to provide additional quantity of water for Lanco power project. He further alleged that the management of the Lanco had also replaced its pipelines to increase the intake of water from the river. He wanted to know why the irrigation officials have increased the height of the gates to provide water to a private power plant, when they have rejected the proposal in the interest of the delta farmers. Nagi Reddy also blamed the officials for not starting the barrage lower apron repair works though the tender was called for four years ago. He said that the officials have allocated the lower apron repair works for Rs 33 crore and repairs to left and right canal head regulator works at Rs 32 crore. Though the works were allocated four years ago, he said that they were not started yet. He demanded an inquiry into the delay in taking up works at the barrage. He wondered how the irrigation officials were silent even as the works were delayed by four years.
