I like rain, tsunami and other disaster. Don’t misunderstand me. Natural disasters are great equaliser and make people realise that all are equal in the eyes of nature. I will share some interesting facts of Chennai floods’.
After Navarathri and Deepavali festivals Monsoon season (rain) started in coastal region of Tamil Nadu state. It’s very unfortunate that heavy rains lashed capital city Chennai (347.3 mm)and five districts namely, Kanchipuram (156.6 mm), Thiruvallur (342.6 mm), Cuddalore (156.6 mm), Villupuram ( 237.3 mm) and Vellore (81.0 mm) (source: the week ending statistics 02.12.2015).
Favourable outcome of heavy rains are improvement in the level of ground water and volume of water in tanks to 3,326million cubic feet(even though it is much lesser than the total maximum storage capacity of 11,057(mft) but the current level is 20 percent higher than the last two years).
Let me present the havoc played by heavy rains. Local, inter-districts and inter-state road transport services, trains and flights are stopped. Many people are sleeping in bus stand, railway stations and inside domestic terminal also. Thanks to recent development in telecommunication messages like Please help me by SMS, WhatsApp, twitter, face book, linked in, and other social media are received but sometimes it is not possible to send messages due to power failure.
Natural disaster does not discriminate between religion, caste, rich and poor, people living in apartments and in slums I observed oneness in humanity.
At traffic signals we see poor people, women, children and disabled persons begging and get a false feeling that we are better and not beggars. But during natural disaster all are beggars.
I received SMS from my close friend SMS who always talk about his wealth and money He works with American Software Company at Chennai. Presently drawing a salary of Rs. 18 lakhs p.a, and has 3BHK in suburban, bank balance of Rs. 65 thousand and two credit cards At present all those things are of no use. He is like many others is standing on his house terrace and waiting anxiously for a food and water packet to be dropped by relief team. Cash is not useful all the time but food is necessary all the time. Kindly consider to work at AMMA mess, its more help full to poor. “Help to the poor the same help to receive to you (Upanishad)”. Long queue at Petrol bunk, Hospital, Milk shops etc.,
It is heartening to note that all political parties, whatever may be the reason, start relief work in areas hit by disaster. There are some good Samaritans. The Cinema actors, SHGs, Cricket player and may be others send food and donations. Thanks for yours support. In Particular our students in Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) distributed cooked food for all affected areas.People more demanded like milk, biscuits, and primary medicines for children and old age persons.
On 26th December 2004 tsunami affected areas, Some field studies conducted by social science researchers ‘studies reveal that during 2004 tsunami all the relief did not reach the victims of tsunami’. Kindly do proper plan to see that relief reaches really affected persons. Humanity is an important role of human beings why it’s coming in disaster only.
