jaya2New Delhi: Film star Jayaprada, who was elected twice from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh and is a sitting MP, called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi, triggering speculation on whether she would join the Congress. Jayaprada was elected on the Samajwadi Party ticket to Lok Sabha twice in 2004 and 2009, but recently she was expelled from the SP along with Amar Singh, who is also her mentor.

Both Jayaprada and the Congress remained tightlipped about the recent meeting. Significantly, for quite some time now, Jayaprada has been giving conflicting signals on whether she would join the YSRCP or the Congress in Andhra Pradesh. In fact, she had even hinted that she can shift back to Andhra Pradesh to contest the next Lok Sabha polls in 2014, after representing Rampur in Uttar Pradesh for terms in 2004 and 2009.

According to sources, Amar Singh has suggested to Jayaprada to steer clear of any regional party and to join a national party. He wants Jayaprada to join the Congress, so that she could even widen her options for contesting the next polls. If it is Congress, then it can consider fielding her from her home State of Andhra Pradesh or may even renominate her to contest on the Congress ticket from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, where the Congress is keen on increasing its seats tally.
