rahulgandi*Tells AICC office-bearers they will be watched and assessed * Their focus should be on delivering results *'Responsibility brings in accountability' New Delhi: Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi has conveyed to the new AICC office-bearers that their work will be watched and assessed at frequent intervals and they will be held accountable for the performance of the party in the States where the charge is held by them. He told them in clear-cut terms that those holding responsibility will be held accountable. They will accordingly be rewarded or punished. Their focus should be on delivering results, as the party braces for its biggest electoral battle in 2014. At the first formal meeting with the new set of AICC office-bearers, Rahul Gandhi felt the need for giving more representation to women in the party. Sources stated that when AICC General-Secretary Luizinho Faleiro introduced himself as in-charge of the North-Eastern States, which he referred to as "Seven Sisters," Rahul Gandhi smilingly quipped, "I see only Six Sisters here," pointing towards the six women present in the meeting that included Ambika Soni and Asha Rani, beside others. He expressed the hope of ensuring 50 per cent representation to women in the AICC in the coming two to three years. According to AICC Spokesman Bhakta Charan Das, Rahul Gandhi is not so much for reservation for women in the party organisation, as he is for giving them greater representation. AICC General Secretary Ambika Sonia is the only woman among the 12 AICC General Secretaries, while there are five women among the 44 AICC Secretaries. Ahead of the formal meeting, Rahul Gandhi had one-on-one meetings with AICC General-Secretaries in-charge of the poll-bound States, to take stock of party's poll-preparedness. After the recent AICC reshuffle, the average age is 52 years. The Congress Vice-President has asked the younger leaders to forge ahead, taking the help of their seniors. Setting aside the issue of alliances, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday advised the Congress leaders to work aggressively to strengthen the party base across the country. While the issue of alliances would be taken up at the appropriate time, the primary focus should be on strengthening the party in all the States. In the meeting, which was more introductory in nature, Rahul Gandhi invoked Mahatma Gandhi to drive home the point that the party needs to connect with the masses. Rahul Gandhi's message to the leaders was simple and straight, to focus more than anything else on strengthening the organisation. The Congress may well face the prospect of having to go it alone in key States like West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, after the Trinamool Congress and the DMK walked out of the UPA. During the interaction session that lasted for more than two hours, Rahul Gandhi was keen to prepare the party for the first electoral challenge in the upcoming round of State Assembly elections slated for later this year in Rajasthan, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram and later the large electoral battle in 2014. The way initiatives for strengthening the party are being taken by Rahul Gandhi reveals that he is effectively in command and will also lead the party's electoral campaign from the front, as the face of the Congress.
