New Delhi: As the TDP intensified its protests, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Monday suspended nine Seemandhra MPs (four from TDP and five from Congress) for five days for disrupting the proceedings, demanding that Andhra Pradesh be kept united. Since under the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha, the suspension is for five consecutive days, the Seemandhra MPs from the TDP and the Congress are effectively suspended for the rest of the monsoon session, as it concludes on September 6.
In a related development, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien named two TDP MPs from Seemandhra --Y S Chowdhury and C M Ramesh, leading to their suspension for the day. Suspended MPs in the Lok Sabha are N Kristappa, N Siva Prasad, K Narayan Rao and M Venugopal Reddy (all from TDP) and A Sai Pratap, L Rajagopal, Ananta Venkatram Reddy, Magunta Srinivasul Reddy and K Bapi Raju (all from Cong).
When the Lok Sabha assembled for the day in the morning, the four TDP MPs in the Lok Sabha raised slogans for keeping Andhra Pradesh united, even as five Congress MPs from Seemandhra joined them. Speaker Meira Kumar said, “I name you under Rule 374-A. You may forthwith withdraw from the precincts of the House.” Immediately Meira Kumar adjourned the House till 2 pm. K Narayan Rao came out of the House before 2 PM and was not allowed again into the House. When the House re-assembled, the remaining three suspended TDP MPs refused to withdraw from the House. However, they were not moved as a discussion was in progress. Around 5.30 PM, Siva Prasad came out on health reasons.
Venugopal Reddy and Kristappa remained in the House till 9.30 PM when they were evicted by the marshals. In the Rajya Sabha, the two TDP MPs started raising slogans in the House, demanding that Andhra Pradesh be kept united. Deput Chairman P J Kurien, who was in the Chair, pleaded with the TDP MPs not to compel the Chair to act against them on a daily basis. He said it was strange that the Zero Hour, which was the hour for the MPs to express themselves on all important issues, should be disrupted in such a manner. As the TDP MPs refused to relent, Kurien named the two TDP MPs and adjourned the House for 15 minutes, to enable the MPs to withdraw from the House.
