After months of dithering, BJP Parliamentary Board today declared amiable face Harsh Vardhan as its chief ministerial candidate for Delhi Assembly elections. The faction-ridden party unit projected 59-yearold Harsh Vardhan, ignoring opposition from its Delhi unit chief Vijay Goel, who was projecting himself as the CM candidate ahead of polls.

Biting the bullet, BJP President Rajnath Singh went ahead and named Dr Harsh Vardhan as the Delhi BJP Chief Ministerial candidate, despite the near-rebellion staged by Delhi BJP President Vijay Goel on Sunday. The party did manage to get Vijay Goel on board, who was present on the dais on Wednesday, when Rajnath Singh declared Harsh Vardhan as the Delhi BJP Chief Ministerial candidate.

The BJP Parliamentary Board met in the morning with the specific agenda of taking the call on Delhi BJP Chief Ministerial candidate. The RSS finally had its way as Harsh Vardhan was its choice to take on threetimes Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections on December 4.

The RSS feels that Harsh Vardhan has several plus points: has clean-image; is non-controversial; enjoys professional reputation as a doctor; and is known as an administrator. His image could prove to be an asset for the BJP in taking on the string of corruption scandals of the Congress. Harsh Vardhan was the Delhi Health Minister in the first BJP Government in Delhi from 1993-98, when he was closely associated with pulse polio drive. Amid fanfare, the announcement was made in the presence of BJP patriarch L K Advani, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj,

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, former BJP President Murli Manohar Joshi, Delhi BJP incharfe Nitin Gadkari amd RSS pointsman in BJP Ram Lal, besides all Delhi BJP top-brass like V K Malhotra and Vijendra Gupta, besides Harsh Vardhan and Vijay Goel. Several rounds of meetings were behind the show of unity. Vijay Goel was compelled to go public on Monday, with his clarification that he would abide by whatever decision the party takes and it is for the BJP Parliamentary Board to decide on the Delhi BJP Chief Ministerial candidate. On Tuesday, Vijay Goel met Rajnath Singh, where a stern message was handed out to him, to fall in line or face isolation.

Vijay Goel could be given ticket to the Lok Sabha elections after the Assembly polls and if the BJP-led NDA Government is formed at the Centre, he could be made a Union Minister. For Vijay Goel, it was dream gone awry when it was his best chance to make a shot at the post of Delhi Chief Minister, as the Congress has had three consecutive terms in office. For its part, the Sangh was convinced that Vijay Goel cannot match Sheila Dikshit’s image. After making its choice, the Sangh did not take kindly to the way Vijay Goel reacted to the party move on Sunday to project Harsh vardhan as the Delhi BJP Chief Ministerial candidate.
