New Delhi: Beginning from the 2009 general elections, as many as 9.7 crore voters have been added to the existing list of voters that in turn amounts to 13.5% rise in voters in India.

As per the statistics, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal registered the highest growth of voters in percentage terms. Tamil Nadu stood in the first position with 29.3% rise, and for Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal which followed the next three positions, the rise was 28%, 25% and 19%, respectively.

In an Interesting manner, the top gainers in these years had a decline of voters in the preceding five years i.e. from 2004 to 2009. Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh had shown a decline in voters of around 11.9%, 1.9% and 0.7% respectively between the 2004 and 2009 general elections. However, voters in West Bengal grew during the entire period of 10 years. In between 2004 and 2009 it was 9.6% as compared to 19% between 2009 and 2014, as far as growth of electorates in west Bengal is concerned.

With an addition of 1.8 crore voters to its rolls in the last five years, Uttar Pradesh registered a huge growth of electorates. After UP with 13.44 crore electors, Maharashtra stood second with 7.9 crore voters. West Bengal with 6.25 crore, Andhra Pradesh with 6.24 crore and Bihar with 6.21 crore voters occupied the next places in a row.

As far Delhi is concerned, it registered a 9% increase in its electorate in the preceding five years amounting to 1.21 crore of total voters.

The elections commission has attributed to the vast increase in the electorates to their efforts of encouraging the youth for registering for the same. However, most people opine that it was the growth in population that increased the electorates.
