Taken aback by the ongoing violence in the BTAD areas in Assam and crumbling under pressure from various corners over the Assam government’s inability to control the violence, the state government today announced measures to curb such incidents in the future.

Speaking to the media, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that a special force will be created soon in the state, and its solely responsibility will be to seize all the illegal arms that are present in the BTAD areas.

“There will be a thorough search, and all the illegal arms will be seized. Once these are seized, such violence scenarios will come down,” said the chief minister.
The chief minister also added that a special battalion will be formed in all the conflict prone areas in the state which will comprise of local people and will also comprise of members of all the communities residing in those areas.
“The sole objective of this battalion will be to tackle conflict situation and to ensure violence doesn’t occur,” said Gogoi.
The chief minister also added that to resolve such conflicts permanently, it is also essential to reduce the communication gaps between community members and also to address any misunderstandings or fear that might be present among the members of the communities living in a particular area.
Regarding the ongoing violence, Gogoi said that as of date 22 people have been arrested as of date, and further added that 65 people were charge sheeted by the CBI after the communal violence in 2012 in the BTAD areas.
The chief minister further added that he is in favour of panchayat elections in all the sixth schedule areas in the state, and said that it will help curb such conflicts.
“Holding panchayat elections is decentralization of power, and it is very necessary,” said Gogoi.
