Good news for hawkers of Sultan bazaar and Koti in Hyderabad and Majestic in Bengaluru as Kolkata has legalized hawking on streets.Vendors here are hoping that Telangana and Karnataka too will adopt the same rule.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday announced a policy aimed at legalizing hawking in the state and dedicated counters will be set up registered hawkers beginning July 15.

"We are the first state government in the country which has decided to legalise hawking and formulated a policy for them, Banerjee said at Kolkata following a meet with the hawkers.

Banerjee's announcement follows a 72-hour shutdown by shopkeepers in the city's New Market against the hawker menace.

The shopkeepers have been contending that it was becoming difficult for them to stay in the business as hawkers, apart from competing with cheaper goods, block shop facades preventing the entry of customers. Will the same happen in Telangana and Karnataka too?
