Our members of parliament have a strange record of absenteeism in the house even during crucial days of budget, discussion and debate on issues like agriculture and atrocities against women. Statistics from Parliament house - Speakers chambers show very disappointing numbers. "Hardly 100 plus members are attending the house even though its strength is five fold - 545," lamented speaker Sumitra Mahajan at a recent workshop in the parliament annexe.

A senior MP said most of the MPs are driven to undertake the works of their constituents and go to offices of the several ministries- Panchayat, Municipal, Industry and also Agriculture during their stay in Delhi. "Every week, we get so many representations we have to follow them or people in constituency will not hesitate to talk ill about us," says a senior TDP MP. On the first day of the budget session hardly 137 MPs participated and on the day the finance minister Arun Jaitely introduced the budget, there were only 124 members in the lok sabha.

Congrerss MP Rahul Gandhi did not attend a single day in the last session but came to house today. Congress deputy leader Captain Amarender Singh attended for only one day, Mahbuba Mufti, of PDP came only for five days. But the BJP floor and political managers defend themselves on their MPs absenteeism and say that "even during the UPA days, there were hardly 100 members that too during presentation. At least, now we are above 100," they say.
