Veteran politician of Assam and former Union minister Bijoykrishna Handique was died on Sunday at a hospital in Jorhat.


81-year-old Handique was admitted at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital on Saturday for his heart problems and shifted to ICU, but died on Sunday at around 12:30 pm.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Anjan Dutta had paid their homage to the veteran politician.

Handique was the minister for Mines and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in the UPA-II government.

The senior politician of Assam had elected to the Lok Sabha from Jorhat constituency for six consecutive terms since 1991.

Born in 1934, Handique was first elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 1972 and also was a member of Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1985.

He was also the Union Minister of State for Defence, Parliamentary Affairs, Mines, Chemicals and Fertilizer during the tenure of the UPA-I government.

He was the only son of renowned scholar Krishnakanta Handique.
