Hyderabad: The first National Handloom Day will be celebrated across the country on Friday. Various programmes are planned in both the Telugu-speaking States on this occasion. Ministers T Harish Rao, Jupally Krishna Rao and Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Government Advisor KV Ramanachary are expected to attend a programme by Weavers’ Society at Karnati Gardens in Hayathnagar on Friday evening.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be launching the first National Handloom Day from Chennai in Tamil Nadu. He will participate in a programme to be held at the prestigious Centenary Hall of Madras University. BJP State secretary Y Geetha, who met the Prime Minister along with a delegation from weavers’ community last week, said that 50 representatives, from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh each, had left for Chennai to attend Modi’s programme.

August 7 has been chosen as Handloom Day due to its special significance in India’s history. It was on this day that the Swadeshi Movement was launched in 1905. The formal proclamation of Swadeshi Movement was made on August 7, 1905, in a massive meeting in the Calcutta Town Hall. The movement involved revival of domestic products and production processes.

The Union government has declared August 7 as National Handloom Day every year, in memory of this. Modi will confer the Sant Kabir and National Awards for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014 to distinguished personalities from weavers’ community on this occasion.

He will launch ‘India Handloom’ brand and an exhibition showcasing master creations of the awardees will also be inaugurated on the occasion in the adjacent senate building of Madras University. The Handloom Day will be celebrated all over the country in association with the respective State governments.

The observance of National Handloom Day and honouring of handloom weavers will not only provide an impetus to the handloom industry in India but will also serve to promote handloom as a genuine international product of good quality. India has one of the finest textile traditions in the world.

Handloom weaving is one of the largest economic activities after agriculture, providing direct and indirect employment to more than 43 lakh weavers and allied workers. The sector contributes to nearly 15 per cent of the cloth production in the country and also contributes to the country’s export earnings. 95 per cent of the world’s hand woven fabric comes from India.
