Guwahati: A day before of Independence Day celebration in across the country, army had foiled a major terror attack in Assam on Thursday night, officials said on Friday.

A militant belonging to Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO) was killed during gun fight with security forces in Kokrajhar district, when militants attempting to blow up the railway track in the state.

Security forces had recovered a 7 kilograms weighing IED, one 7.65mm pistol, two magazines, two hand grenades, detonators in possession from the slain militant.

Based on intelligence input, army and police had jointly launched operation at railway tracks on Thursday night, where a militant group had tried to plant an IED to blow up the track.

"When security personnel reached the area militants had fired and exchanged bullets, in which a militant killed on spot and others had managed to flee from the area with the help of darkness, " an army official based in BTAD said.

Assam police had sounded high alert across the state for probable terror attack ahead of Independence Day.

"Paresh Baruah led ULFA (I), NDFB( S), KLO, GNLA militants has been trying to attack upon security personnel and explosions in various areas in the state, " Assam DGP Khagen Sarma said.
