Guwahati: Gradually risen of abduction, kidnapping cases in Assam has now become a new security threat for the state.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said in its latest report that, a total of 4823 kidnapping and abduction cases were registered in Assam in 2014.

It is the seventh highest no of abduction incidence in the country.

The report said that, a total of 77,237 incidence of kidnapping and abduction in India during the year.

"Uttar Pradesh witnessed the highest number of incidence with 12,361 cases, followed by 7,833 cases in Madhya Pradesh, 7,143 cases in Delhi, 6,570 in Bihar, 6,110 in West Bengal, 5,671 in Rajasthan during the year, " the report said.

Assam is witnessing a spurt in cases of kidnapping and abduction as the incidence has gradually risen in past few years.

"Small break-away factions of the major outfit groups, former insurgents, other criminal gangs are involved in the hostage taking incidence. It now becomes a new security threat for the state, " a top official of Assam police said.

According to Assam police records, a total of 1,818 kidnapping and abduction cases were registered in 2006 in the state, while 1,893 in 2007, 2,219 in 2008, 2,719 in 2009, 3,250 in 2010, 3,785 in 2011, 3,812 in 2012 and 4,831 in 2013.

The increasing cases of kidnapping and abduction for ransom are in an indication of the new security threat for the state.

The NCRB report said that, the kidnapping and abduction incidence have been risen in other North Eastern States as 146 cases in Arunachal Pradesh, 182 in Manipur, 179 in Meghalaya, 7 in Mizoram, 37 in Nagaland, 126 in Tripura and 20 in Sikkim.
