NIT unrest: Parents cry foul, slams J-K Police

Crying foul over the ongoing unrest in Srinagar's National Institute of Technology (NIT), the parents on Wednesday strongly condemned the behaviour of the local police and demanded security for their wards.

One of the parents told ANI that no one is paying heed to the woes of the children rather they are being harassed by the administration and the state police.

"We are concerned about the students. They are being harassed by the administration and the Jammu and Kashmir Police... The students are being threatened and beaten up by the police. We demand security for the students," he said.

Reports of children being forcibly being pulled out of hostels and then beaten up by the police came last night.

"I fail to understand why our children are being treated like militants, it is very wrong. Our children are innocent," said another parent.

Unrest was witnessed again at NIT campus yesterday after the scene of clash which took place last week, with outstation students expressing a sense of insecurity and attempting to leave the campus, leading to a confrontation with the police in which some were injured.

Tension simmered in the NIT campus last week after India lost the World T20 semi-final to the West Indies.

Some engineering students from outside the state claimed Kashmiri students had chanted anti-India slogans and burst firecrackers after India's defeat.
