New Delhi: Thanking voters and the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) state units for resounding victory in Assam and party's moral boosting performance in other four states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the BJP's forming a government in Assam is surprising for many just like the time when the party joined a government in Jammu and Kashmir.

"The election results have made it clear that the people of the nation are accepting, praising and supporting BJP's developmental agenda for changing lives of the common man," said Prime Minister Modi at a special function organised at the BJP headquarters to commemorate the victory.

"People's support will inspire us and provide us more strength to work for the benefit of the poor and for changing lives of the common man," he added.

Hailing the results as "very inspiring" for the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the Prime Minister said, "I thank the voters of the five states from the bottom of my heart for reposing their trust in the BJP."

"The BJP is winning people's acceptance from people living from across the country, which is good for democracy. We will constantly try to fulfil people's expectations," he said.

At the end, Prime Minister Modi congratulated BJP's president Amit Shah and his team, BJP's party units and their teams for the victory.

In Assam, the BJP so far won 60 seats on its own in the 126-seat House, while its ally AGP won 13 seats and its another ally BPF won 11 seats. The BJP has thus made a history by winning an assembly election in any north-eastern state.

In West Bengal, TMC won 185 seats, well above the 50 per cent mark in the 294-seat assembly. The Congress-Left combine took 68 seats, while the BJP bagged two seats. Independents and others won four seats.

In Tamil Nadu, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) touched the halfway mark by winning 116 seats in the 232-seat assembly, while the results for 32 seats are yet to come out. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) bagged 74 seats, while Congress bagged nine seats and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) one seat.

In Kerala, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) returned to power by winning 85 of the total 140 seats, trouncing the ruling the United Democratic Front (UDF), which could bag only 46 seats.

The BJP,however, opened its account in the state by winning one seat, while eight seats won by others.

In Puducherry, the Congress won 15 seats and its alliance partner the DMK two seats, giving it a majority in the 30-seat House to form a government. The All India N R Congress (AINRC) bagged eight seats and the AIADMK has won four seats, while one seat went to an Independent.
