Mathura violence: Slain SHO Santosh Yadav cremated in Jaunpur

Farah Station House Officer (SHO) Santosh Yadav, who was shot dead by protesters during a flare-up at Jawahar Bagh in Mathura, was cremated at his native place in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur district on Saturday morning.

Yadav, whose mortal remains were brought to his native place in the district on Friday night, is survived by his wife, a nine-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son.

Jaunpur Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP K.P. Singh, District Magistrate Bhanu Chandra Goswami, Superintendent of Police Rohan P. Kanay were among those who paid tributes to the brave policeman, who laid down his life in the line of duty.

According to post-mortem report, Yadav died after a bullet hit close to his nose and passed through the skull.

Mathura Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Vivek Mishra told reporters on Saturday, "The post mortem was conducted by a panel of four doctors, who concluded that the SHO died after a bullet hit near his nose and passed through the skull. They suspected that the bullet was fired by a powerful gun, but in the absence of the bullet, they found it difficult to ascertain as to which gun was used."

Besides SHO Yadav, Mathura Superintendent of Police (City) Mukul Dwivedi was also killed in the violence.

The death toll in the Mathura violence rose to rose to 24, while more than 40 people reported injured.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has ordered an inquiry into the incident and also announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs. 20 lakh next of kin to the deceased policemen.
