Telangana state is well connected with the roads. Department of Panchayat Raj and Department of Roads & Buildings are responsible for building and maintenance of road infrastructure in the State. The total road length in the State is 97,019 Km in 2015-16, of which 70,201 km (i.e., 72%) is under the Department of Pachayat Raj and 26,818 (i.e., 28%) is under Road & Building Department.

District-wise distribution roads under the Panchayat Raj Department reveals that Mahabubnagar District has 16% of total road lenght in Telangana, followed by Nalgonda (15%), Warangal (13%).

Road Density in Telangana

Road density is the ratio of the length of the total road to the total land area (Km road length per 100 sqare kilometer of area). Average road density of the State is 81 km per 100 sq km area. District-wise analysis shows that Hyderabad has highest road density in the State with 100 km road length per 99.54 sq.km, followed by Nalgonda and Karimnagar. Adilabad district has least road density in the State with 63.95. Telangana road density is lesser than the all-India average of 131.77km per 100 sq km which implies that the state has to improve road infrastructure.

National Highways: The NH wing of Roads and Buildings Department is the executing agency for the development and maintenance of National Highways in the state of Telangana. The Government of India provides funds under Plan & Non Plan for the development and maintenance of National Highways in the state. There are 16 National Highways in the state of Telangana covering a length of 2573 Kms criss-crossing the state out of which 768 kms are with NHAI for development under NHDP. The density of National Highways in Telangana is 2.24 Km / 100 Sq. Km against National average of 2.84 Km / 100 Sq. Km.
