​Hyderabad: With frequent complaints of LPG cylinder delivery boys extracting money from housewives for the delivery of the cylinder, oil companies have started to issue smart cards to consumers with which payments can be made with a single swipe.
Consumers are usually at the mercy of the LPG cylinder delivery boys who demand anywhere between Rs 20 and Rs 30 each time for delivering a cylinder at the doorstep. Customers have no choice but to shell out the money as demanded by the delivery boy.
According to estimates, the annual burden on one crore customers is at least over Rs 150 crore in Telangana State. According to oil company officials, LPG consumers are being given smart cards, which would be like an ATM card. The delivery boy who comes to hand over the cylinder would now be equipped with a swiping machine, which would help in completing the transaction.
The consumer needs to swipe the card in the machine and it would deduct the exact cost of the cylinder and the transaction would be completed. To begin with, the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) has initiated the process by introducing ‘EZY GAS CARD’ with a unique number on every card. The card has been given to some of its consumers and in due course, the card would be given to all consumers.
State- level Oil Coordinator Madhukar Ingole told The Hans India that the idea behind introducing the smart card was to make the delivery process of LPG cylinder simple. “Earlier, consumers used to get the cylinder and the delivery boys used to collect money from them and deposit it with the agency, which in turn used to deposit amount into the oil company’s bank account.
Then the subsidy would be transferred to the consumer. Under the new system, a hand-held swipe machine would brought by the delivery boy where the amount would be deducted directly from the account of the consumer, leaving no scope for the delivery boy to demand money,” said Madhukar Ingole.
The SLC said they are in the process of a tie-up with banks and held talks with State Bank of India. The smart cards are issued to HPCL consumers and later extended to consumers from other company, he said.
The official said the oil companies have been receiving several complaints of delivery boys demanding more money from consumers. This initiative of smart card would ensure that the menace is tackled at a one-time cost of Rs 20, he said.
According to oil company officials, the dealership agreement with the oil companies specifies that “A dealer shall at his own cost and without charging consumers any extra commission arrange for the delivery of full cylinders from his own storage premises to the customer premises and for the return of empty cylinders from the consumer’s premises to his own approved storage premises.”
As per the rule, the delivery boys are paid their service charge and the amount is included in the bill. Consumers need not give any additional amount if the house is less than 6 km away from the agency’s godown.
“The charge depends on the distance ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 15, but that amount is already included in the bill. The delivery boys cannot demand extra money,” said Greater Hyderabad Gas dealers Association secretary M Rajender Reddy.
